CBT innovator project

CBT innovator project

The CBT innovator project is a two-year project implemented with support from the ViiV Healthcare Positive Action targeting slum adolescent girls and young women aged 15 – 24 years attending PMTCT and EID clinics at public health facilities in Kampala, Uganda. The overall expected impact of this facility-based project is contributing to the reduction in HIV self-stigma among young mothers attending PMTCT clinics at public health facilities serving the urban poor in Kampala.

The project is building the capacity of HIV expert clients in PMTCT clinics to deliver monthly one-hour Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) sessions for HIV self-stigma reduction. Expert clients are HIV positive men and women who deliberately and skilfully use their own experience living with HIV to help others overcome the main challenges inherent in an HIV positive diagnosis.

Afrislum complements the efforts at the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) health facilities through training expert clients to provide psychosocial support to young PMTCT clients to enhance self-care behaviours such as enrolment, retention and adherence to ART.
